Minutes of the Wednesday, June 26, 2006 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities, with video connection to the Richmond VAMC.

Attending: L. Buckley, T. Duane, M.H. Hackney, L. Joseph, W. Klein, E. Micalizzi Seitz, D. Stewart, B. Sood

    1. Discussion about conferences for the academic year 2006/2007
      1. Noon conference dates are September 11 and October 17, topics include:
        1. IRB-how it works, what is it, how to use it when developing research ideas and plans; consider having examples about working with the IRB.
        2. Dr. Duane also has list from previous discussions; she will write up and send out to Executive Committee.
        3. How to nurture interdisciplinary communications and activities (gleaned from comments on the Faculty Needs Assessment survey, May 2006).
    2. Dr. Morahan Visit on July 12, 2006.
      1. Need to make sure that we have a good nucleus of women to meet with her; several of us are committed to clinics that cannot be changed.
      2. Issues to discuss:
        1. Need to have more women in leadership roles; gather data to determine trend;
        2. How are the rules made? re: only fulltime faculty can be on boards? What is fulltime?
        3. Define the barriers for women in leadership roles (e.g. part-time positions? How can part-time – 40 hours – faculty contribute?
        4. Grooming women for leadership; success planning
        5. How to keep working women working so that more will potentially go to leadership roles?
      3. Use July 12 to strategize for meeting with the Dean
    3. If VCU wants to keep getting awards for working women recognition, then women’s roles will need to continue to be documented.
      1. Suggest a meeting with Dr. Strauss to review WISDM goals, concerns, and invite his input, how we can help him;
      2. Suggest a meeting with Katherine Haley, Secretary of the Commonwealth and/or Dawn Farrar, Deputy Secretary of Commonwealth, who oversee gubernatorial appointments. W. Klein to check for how to get an appointment with her; will need a premeeting to plan and then a formal meeting; B. Sood, also will check and is happy to write a letter
    4. WISDM student organization. Report by W. Klein
      1. Group has written bylaws and dues
      2. 54 paying members
      3. Program in development: medical student  mentoring and a Student Health Day:
        1. Fair at a local high school (November 10). 
        2. Support from the Ukrops. 
        3. Plan is for speakers and booths for a women’s health fair. 
        4. Young men will be at other activities.
    5. Last commentary
      1. Invite Marie Curran, VP for HR at VCUHS, or the ACC director Jalana McCasland, to speak at either seminar or other setting.
    6. Next COSOWAM Meeting: August 16th, 4 pm, Sanger 1-038
