Minutes of the May 18, 2005 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities

Attending: Dr. Zakia Bell, Dr. Margaret Biber, Dr. Karen Cropsey, Dr. Paulina Essah, Ms. Carol Hampton, Dr. Wendy Klein, Dr. Susan Kornstein, Dr. Rita Shiang

1. Update on Dean Search: Dr. Jerome Strauss (University of Pennsylvania) is being interviewed next week. Committee members do not know of other candidates at this time.
2. Update on Letter for Faculty Dining Room: Dr. Essah revised the letter and read aloud to the committee. Committee members suggested minor changes to nomenclature. Dr. Essah agreed to evise and send to Carol Hampton to go over for final review of nomenclature, etc. and then put on WISDM letterhead and send. The letter will be discussed at the June meeting if necessary.
3. Faculty Exit Survey/Future Directions: The committee's recommendations were presented to Dr. Retchin (April 28) and Dean Newsome (April 22) by Drs. Klein, Cropsey, and C. Hampton. They committed verbally to support the survey continuing for the next three years with funding ($10,500 over 3 years). Plans call for the next phase to be done online. In 1997, 918 faculty were contacted and 567 (62%) responded to the SOM Faculty Survey. The committee will review the 1997 survey at next month's meeting.
4. Additional items from meetings with Dr. Retchin and Dean Newsome Dr. Retchin agreed to dedicate a staff person to establish and maintain an electronic calendar to publicize conferences, speakers, events, etc.
5. The Committee has invited Dr. Newsome, Dean, School of Medicine, to discuss salary equity and annual chair evaluations at the October meeting. Articles about compensation and salary equity were handed out. Please come prepared with questions for him.

There was a meeting with Deborah Walker (consultant) to evaluate clinical compensation plan structure. Committee members would like clarification of the medical school's goals for compensation (i.e., to meet 50th percentile of AAMC?).

6. Future Directions: Committee members would like to follow-up on current issues:
   • Faculty Exit Survey, including executive summary of survey
   • Previous faculty survey
   • Faculty dining room
   • VCU calendar
