Minutes of the March 16, 2005 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities

Attending:  Dr. Zakia Bell, Dr. Karen Cropsey, Dr. Imad Damaj, Dr. Paulina Essah, Dr. Shobha Ghosh, Ms. Carol Hampton, Dr. Wendy Klein, Dr. Susan Kornstein, Dr. Georgia McIntosh

  1. Update on Dean search: The search is in process. Applications were received from a diverse group of candidates. The university is inviting candidates for interviews. Limited information is available at this time. C. Hampton reported that outreach to ELAM-related prospects continued.
  2. Letter for Faculty Dining Room: Paulina Essah drafted a letter. The committee members provided feedback on the draft letter.  The committee recommended that the dining room be open to all faculty, as it would facilitate communication between faculty.  Members requested that the number of faculty on the VCUHS campus be included in the letter. The letter will be sent to Dr. Retchin, Dr. Wenzel, and Mr. John Duvall.
  3. WISDOM conference: C. Hampton and W. Klein reported that it went very well. Approximately 220 in attendance (including exhibitors and presenters).
  4. Dr. Mary Alice O’Donnell, Director of Graduate Medical Education:  Dr. O’Donnell presented an outline of housestaff benefits to the committee.  Details included sick and family medical leave, paid/unpaid leave, and specialty board requirements. The VCUHS Housestaff Handbook can be accessed at the following link: http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/gme/gmemanual.pdf

Meeting adjourned at 5:15 PM.
