Minutes of the February 15, 2005 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities

Attending:  Dr. Dolores Clement, Dr. Karen Cropsey, Dr. Paulina Essah, Ms. Janett Forte, Dr. Shobha Ghosh, Ms. Carol Hampton, Dr. Donna Jackson, Dr. Wendy Klein, Dr. Susan Kornstein, Dr. Arti Pandya, Dr. Rita Shiang

1. Update on letter regarding IRB pay equity. Committee discussed Dr. Newsome’s response to the committee’s letter.  Carol Hampton to discuss with Dr.Newsome the possibility of sending a letter to Dr. Retchin and including Dr. Newsome’s letter. K. Cropsey reviewed list of panel members. On all IRB panels at VCU, there are 18 MDs, 31 Ph.D.s, and 10 community members. Not sure what percentage or women and/or minority members. Discussion of this topic to continue at future meetings.
2. Update on the Faculty Exit Survey: So far 122 of 241 eligible surveys have been returned, yielding a 51% response rate. General discussion of the preliminary results followed. Kirsten Barrett is running preliminary analyses and will present data at the March or April committee meeting.  Abstract to be submitted to AAMC Research in Medical Education (RIME) for November 2005 annual meeting.
3. Update on Dean search: C. Hampton mentioned an upcoming Dean search committee meeting.  Search committee to receive a list of candidates and their credentials after a credentials committee pre-screens applicants.  C. Hampton discussed the need to build the pool of qualified women candidates.  With some recommendations from ELAM,  Carol sent letters to 6 potential candidates and 4 women deans describing the dean’s package and inviting them to apply or recommend others.  Some of our WISDM officers and COSOWAM members were asked to follow up the letter with a phone call. Discussion of “dean’s package” followed.
4. Letter for Faculty Dining Room: Paulina Essah to draft a letter on behalf of COSOWAM if Georgia McIntosh does not have time.
5. Women’s Health Research Day will be held April 11, 2005. J. Forte encouraged committee members to submit abstracts and register.
6. AAMC Report on Faculty Salaries was mentioned and the access code for general tables was provided in a handout
7. Salary equity issues: C. Hampton reported that during the WHI COE site visit, the consultants inquired to Drs. Retchin and Newsome regarding salary equity.  Her understanding is that some salary study is being conducted by VCUHS, which has hired some consultants.  The Committee will need to follow up with Dr. Retchin for further information.
