September 2004

Minutes of the VCU School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities
Wednesday, September 15, 2004

Attending: Dr. Zakia Bell, Dr. Margaret Biber, Dr. Karen Cropsey (co-chair), Dr. Imad Damaj, Ms. Janett Forte, Dr. Shobha Ghosh, Ms. Carol Hampton, Ms. Donna Jackson, Dr. Susan Kornstein, Dr. Rita Shiang

  1. Dr. Cropsey opened the meeting with introduction of members and welcome.
  2. Dr. Cropsey updated the committee on the Faculty Exit Survey. Final revisions on the survey have been made. IRB approval was received over the summer. The Survey Evaluation and Research Lab will send the survey out in October. Thanks to the Committee members for all their input into the survey during the past year.
  3. Ms. Jackson spoke about the possibility of an Assured Residency Program to help address the school's need to recruit more underserved students. The idea is to provide incoming medical students with guaranteed residency admissions; pending they meet certain criteria, without locking them in for residency. A proposal was drafted by Ms. Jackson in collaboration with Dr. Cynthia Heldberg, Associate Dean for Admissions, and Dr. Wendy Klein, COSOWAM co-chair. Last year, COSOWAM recommended that this possibility, proposed by Dr. Klein, be considered with SOM Admissions and Graduate Medical Education leadership.
  4. The Committee discussed the appointment of a search committee for the SOM Dean by Dr. Sheldon Retchin, CEO VCUHS and VP for Health Sciences. The importance of having women and minority representation on the search committee was discussed. Among the 21 members appointed, 9 are women, 2 are African Americans, and there's a broad representation from the SOM, across the university and VCUHS, the VAMC, community, and other constituencies. (A listing of the Committee members is found in the SOM Dean's Newsline, August 2004 at http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/faculty_staff/newsletter/newsline704.pdf). On June 11, 2004, the WIM Steering Group submitted to Dr. Retchin a list of qualified women physician candidates received from ELAM (Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women), after conversations with ELAM directors. The WIM Steering Group members (Drs. Bela Sood, Joann Bodurtha, and Carol Hampton) were assured that information about the dean's position would be sent to these candidates. If you would like to nominate potential qualified candidates, you are highly encouraged to do so. Interested applicants should send a letter of intent and curriculum vitae to Search Committee for the School of Medicine Dean, VCU, PO Box 980549, Richmond, VA 23298-0549.
  5. The Committee has invited Dr. Newsome, Dean, School of Medicine, to discuss salary equity and annual chair evaluations at the October meeting. Articles about compensation and salary equity were handed out. Please come prepared with questions for him.
  6. Dr. Roy Pickens, Associate VP for Research, was not able to attend the September meeting as planned, and is rescheduled to come to the November meeting. He will discuss issues around compensation for service on IRBs.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00pm. The next meeting will be held October 20, 2004 at 4:00 PM in Sanger Hall Room 1-038.

Prepared by Gabriela Villalobos, Research Assistant
