December 2004
Minutes of the December 15, 2004 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities
Attending: Attending: Dr. Zakia Bell, Dr. Karen Cropsey, Dr. Paulina Essah, Dr. Shobha Ghosh, Ms. Carol Hampton, Dr. Wendy Klein, Dr. Georgia McIntosh, Dr. Rita Shiang
- Update on the Faculty Exit Survey: Karen Cropsey is the PI on this study, and the Survey and Evaluation Research Lab has been assisting with data collection and will assist with analysis. Dr Cropsey reported preliminary data. So far 117 of 276 surveys have been returned. The sample size is actually 224 if you remove ineligible faculty (e.g., deceased, still working at VCU, no known address, etc.), yielding a 52% response rate.
- 15 wrong phone numbers
- 33 bad addresses
- 72 nonresponders
- 1 deceased
- 11 ineligible
- 20 refusal
General discussion of the preliminary results followed, along with consensus on trying to follow-up with nonresponders. It was decided that if salient issues arise as results are analyzed, the results of the survey should be brought to VCU's strategic planning group. Hope to wrap up the survey by the end of January and identify issues that merit attention, particularly those that could be changed.
- Review of the Draft IRB letter to the Dean: Reviewed issues and text of letter. The letter will be sent by co-chairs with list of committee members attached. Karen Cropsey to send on department letterhead.
- Update on Dean search: Spencer Stuart firm leading search. There will be an advertisement/ job description in JAMA. Once the description has been approved, the search will commence formally.
- Letter for Faculty Dining Room: General discussion of history of issue. Georgia McIntosh to draft letter on behalf of COSOWAM. Will include preliminary results from faculty exit survey.
- Priorities for the committee for next year: Carol Hampton initiated discussion of salary equity, benefits. Confusion about differences between MDs and Ph.Ds, VCU, VCU Health System, and MCV Physicians. Would like to research differences in systems and create compendium on benefits of each system. Are there differences between departments? Perhaps ask Cindy Andrews, Maria Curran to come in January or February. Someone from each of the three systems to describe benefits.
Meeting adjourned at 5:10 PM.
Prepared by Jessye Cohen, Assistant to the COSOWAM committee.
