October 2002

Minutes of the October 16 Meeting of the School of Medicine Committee on the Status of Women and Minorities

  1. Dr. Wendy Klein opened the meeting with introduction of members and welcome.
  2. The minutes from the September 18, 2002, meeting were approved as written.
  3. Invitee, Dr. Jim Messmer, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, discussed the 2002 AAMC Graduation Medical Student Questionnaire and issues of professionalism. The data centered around mistreatment in medical school.
    • The data showed improvement by VCU in some areas, but like all medical schools reported, there is still room for improvement with:
      • More students being aware that the School has a mistreatment policy in place;
      • In 2002, only 1 to 2 students reported that they had been personally mistreated in various categories. Dr. Messmer commented that what's important is not "how many times," but that it happened and what are we going to do about it.
      • In the area of frequent sexual mistreatment by school personnel it continues to be 0%.
    • Dr. Messmer commented that:
      • He hopes that students would feel empowered to go to someone;
      • Looks like we may have done a little better with the students that just graduated, and
      • The faculty members are setting a good example in the hospital.
    Dr. Messmer suggested it would be a good idea to get together representatives of the different ethnicities to review and brainstorm about mistreatment and related issues.
    Professionalism standards, officially approved this fall, are in place for students in the Students' Handbook, distributed at the beginning of school. Also, the Professionalism Standards reporting process has been presented to David Ross, General Counsel, for review. Carol Hampton reported that the Professionalism Committee is moving along in getting the professionalism reporting process finalized.
    Thanks to Dr. Messmer for interpreting and sharing this data with the Committee.
  4. Carol updated the Committee on the Pathways to Leadership Conference brochure. It is at the printers and the first ones will be distributed Monday, October 21st. Due to the growth of the Conference, it will be held this year at the Richmond Marriott Hotel.
  5. Other Issues:
    • Dr. Klein announced the November 13 WIMS seminar with Delegate Viola Baskerville. Thanks to Dr. Klein for arranging this speaker.
    • For next meeting and future issues:
      • Work session
      • Need to prioritize
      • Dr. Klein thinks we need to continue to look at retention of women faculty.
    Dr. Klein welcomes the members' input and any issues you feel we need to consider.
  6. The meeting adjourned.
