Update on Current Activities:
-
The Women In Medicine and Science Faculty Organization Executive Council Update-Joann and Carol reported on the10th Annual Women and Medicine and Science Pathways to Leadership Conference "Choices for Success" held Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Jefferson Hotel, Richmond. Final conference attendance figures were not yet available as of the March 20 COSOWAM meeting. The conference appeared to be the most heavily attended meeting held so far. Carol asked the School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education to break down attendance and evaluations by segments separating out students, residents, clinical faculty, basic sciences faculty, and community physicians. This year's conference appeared to draw many more residents thanks to the efforts of committee member, Shelley Burns. WIM&S Faculty Organization Executive members also wrote to School of Medicine department chairs to encourage attendance. This seemed to be an effective strategy to promote awareness of the conference and to gather support for conference attendance by faculty. The increased numbers of conferences attendees may necessitate a move from the Jefferson Hotel to the larger facilities available at the Marriott. This led to a brief discussion of the financial underpinnings of the conference. Other schools on the MCV campus and various societies were mentioned as potential conference partners. In other discussion, it was noted the conference appeared to be very relaxing to attendees. And, it was suggested that the conference planner consider the development of a formal structure to enable conference participants to make connections with one another during the day.
-
WIM&S Faculty Organization-Joann stated that Marcia Carney, M.D., who was to become WIM&S President in September is now in private practice. Carol noted that almost half of the faculty members who served on the Executive Council of WIM&S have left for other positions elsewhere. It was also reported that John Priestley will produce the WIM&S newsletter. Finally, Dr. Marcia Tore, Vice President, Office of Research, will speak on April 29 on research at a lunch-time talk for young women in medicine and sciences and for WIM&S members. All faculty will be invited to hear Dr. Torr.
-
Budget Cuts-Carol reviewed what is currently known regarding state budget cuts and how these will affect the Office of Faculty and Instructional Development in particular. The portion of the OFID 2002-2003 budget based on state funding will be reduced by 3% with a projected reduction of 7%. In 2003-2004, the OFID budget will undergo a permanent 8% reduction. The impact this will have upon women and minority issues is still uncertain. Grant funding is a possible resource to support women and minority issues. Participation in programs such as ELAM could occur biannually instead of annually.
-
ELAM Application-Carol reported that this year's application is in process and Dr. H. H. Newsome, Jr., Dean, School of Medicine, is one of three males on the selection committee for ELAM candidates.
-
Representative Data-Karen S. and Carol will present the COSOWAM report Representation of Women and Minority Faculty to the Dean's Executive Council on May 8.
-
Exit Interviews Project-The exit interview information collected by Ann Setien was briefly discussed. Joann brought up the issue of why those who are recruited for faculty positions don't come. Karen P. said there was some information concerning this issue in the higher education literature that she will try to locate.
-
Future Plans-COSOWAM would like to invite Dr. H.H. Newsome, Dean, School of Medicine, to attend the April or May COSOWAM meeting.
-
The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 pm. The next meeting will be held April 17 2002, Sanger Hall Room 1038 between 4-5 PM.
