Meeting of June 19, 2002, from 4:00 -5:00 PM

Members Present: Biber, Hampton (ex officio), Kornstein, Lebman, Purcell, Setien.
Presiding: Klein and Sanders

Welcome: Members were welcomed to the meeting.

Minutes: The minutes from the May 15, 2002, meeting were amended following a motion from Deb followed seconded by Margaret to strike the incorrect sentence regarding degree of rank: "The information on the slide appears to indicate there is a problem in the small numbers of women at lesser ranks."

Update on Current Activities:

Follow-up to Discussion with H. H. Newsome, Jr., M. D., Dean, School of Medicine-Wendy and Karen S led the group in a review of the items covered in the group's meeting with Dr. Newsome at the May COSOWAM meeting. Committee members discussed working with Peggy Goodwin, Senior Policy and Resource Analyst, and Bill Gleason, Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, regarding salary issues. The group agreed to ask Dr. Newsome to meet in February after Peggy Goodwin analyzes salary data. COSOWAM will also request data from June 1, 1997 until June 30, 2002 from the Dean's Office for SOM faculty centered on the following questions (currently in draft format):

What is the leave rate for women faculty members?

What is the leave rate for male faculty members?
-
Of those who leave, what is their rank, degree, gender, race, and age?
-
What number and percentage of female and male faculty who leave are full-time?
-
What number and percentage of female and male faculty who leave are part-time?
-
What are the reasons female and male faculty leave?
-
What are the tracks (research or clinical) of female and male clinical faculty who leave?
-
How does all the information compare when sorted by department?
Wendy and Carol will write a letter to the Dean requesting the information.
Carol stated she had asked Brenda Seago, Director, CBIL, to help with a literature
search in the biomedical, education, and business literatures for information on
cost analysis for faculty recruitmen in academic medicine.

The Women In Medicine & Science Faculty Organization Executive Council Update-Carol H. reported for Dr. Joann Bodurtha. The 11th Annual Women and Medicine and Science Pathways to Leadership Conference is scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2003, at the Marriott Hotel, Richmond. Carol also asked everyone to return Women in Medicine & Science Faculty Organization ballots, which were sent via e-mail to all SOM women faculty members for officer elections.

Priorities for 2002-2003-Wendy and Karen S. asked the group to prioritize topics and to help create a draft schedule for upcoming COSOWAM meetings. After discussion, the following times and topics were tentatively scheduled:

September-request Lou Harris to follow-up on the faculty dining room issue.

October-ask Ann to present faculty turn-over data.
-
November-hold for COSOWAM work session.
-
December-update on minority faculty and student recruitment.

January-request Paul W.Timmreck, Senior Vice President, Finance and Adminstration, to address space planning issues in the event state bonds for higher education are approved by the Commonwealth's citizens in 2002.

February-book Dr. Newsome to discuss salary data after analysis by Peggy Godwin.

March - open

April-review SOM women and minority representation data with new "snapshot" information added.
The group also discussed meeting with top university administrators to promote increased efforts to place and retain upper level women administrators.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm. The next meeting will be held September 18, 2002 in Sanger Hall Room 1-038 at 4:00 PM.
