Committee on the Status of Women And Minorities Minutes from Meeting on April 17, 2002 from 4:00 -5:15 PM, Sanger Hall Room 1038

Members Present: Burns, Hampton (ex officio), Lebman, Purcell, Spottswood.

Presiding: Klein and Sanders

1. Welcome: Members were welcomed to the meeting.
2. Minutes: The minutes from the March 20, 2002 meeting were approved.
3. Update on Current Activities: The group decided to restrict the agenda to allow for greater discussion of a few key items.
1. Representation Data Update-Karen S. reviewed the current draft of the Representative Women and Minorities report. The draft incorporated revisions suggested at the February 20 COSOWAM meeting. After discussion, additional revisions were also suggested. Representative Women and Minorities will be presented in PowerPoint format by Karen S., Wendy K., and Carol to the Dean's Executive Council on May 8. A final copy of the report will be available at the May COSOWAM meeting. The group expressed thanks to Karen S. and Carol for their hard work in preparing Representative Women and Minorities. Thanks to Karen for developing the PowerPoint!
2. WIMS Pathways to Leadership Conference-Carol stated that several February and March dates were under consideration for the 11th Annual WIMS Pathways to Leadership Conference to be held in Richmond in 2003. Carol is working on finding the optimal time for the conference by scheduling around public and private school spring breaks.
3. ELAM: Carol announced that Dr. Bella Sood, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Interim Chair of Adolescent Psychiatry, was selected as an ELAM fellow.
4. Dr. Newsome Scheduled for May 15 COSOWAM meeting-Carol reported that H.H.Newsome, Jr., Dean, School of Medicine, will attend the May 15 COSOWAM meeting. Members agreed to limit issues for Dr Newsome's consideration at the meeting to concerns regarding salary issues, chair evaluation processes, and faculty retention pattern data by department, gender, race and rank, and chair recruitment.
4. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 pm. The next meeting will be held May 15 2002, Sanger Hall Room 1038 between 4-5 PM. And, as a reminder, the final meeting of COSOWAM until the fall will be held June 19.
